How to Prioritize the Gym with a Busy Schedule

By Coach Keller

September is here, and for many of us this means it’s time to let the summer dust settle and get back into a routine. Whether you're a parent with kids or a teacher heading back to school, an athlete working to get stronger or recover from an injury, or simply someone with a demanding full-time job, incorporating regular gym sessions might seem impossible. But with a little strategic planning and a dash of determination, you can make it work, and we’re here to help!

Here are a few ways to help you get back into the gym and back into shape, even with a jam-packed schedule:

Set New Goals
We are constantly evolving and growing. The goals you set last year might not be the same ones you have or need right now. Whether it's increasing strength, shedding pounds, preparing for a race, or simply staying active, having specific goals in mind will help you stay motivated. When you're clear about what you're working towards, it becomes easier to carve out time for the gym amidst your other responsibilities.

Make the Gym a To-Do Item
Embrace the power of time blocking – a method that involves dedicating specific time slots for various activities. Treat your gym sessions as appointments that are non-negotiable. Just as you wouldn't skip a work meeting or your child's soccer game, allocate the same importance to your workout sessions. We all love checking off that to-do list, and this is one that truly feels good to complete!

Have a Gym Buddy
Everything is better with a friend! Do you know someone who also wants to get to class regularly? Make a plan to go together! Having a buddy to hold you accountable will help you get there, even when you don’t feel like it or don’t think you have time. Don’t have a friend who wants to get sweaty with you? See if someone who is usually in your classes will be that person, they would probably appreciate the accountability too! Sometimes all it takes is getting one text that says, “See you there.”

No Free Time?
Nice try! With the average American spending over 4 hours on social media and 3 hours on Netflix daily, we know you have some time. If you are truly busy from 5:45am to 6:30pm every day and can’t make it to one of our class times, we have Evergreen On Demand to help you get a great workout done from home. Plus, 20-30 minutes of a workout is better than none! Additionally, commuting by bike and walking more are also great ways to keep your body moving.

Be Flexible & Adaptable
Life is unpredictable, and there will be days when your gym plans might go awry due to unforeseen circumstances. Instead of viewing such instances as setbacks, get creative! Take the dog for a longer walk that night, do an online workout, or come to a different class time than your usual one. Rather than beating yourself up, just redirect and do what you can. We all get sick, appointments pop up, but this doesn’t mean we throw the whole plan away. Get to the next class that you can, and stay on track.

We know you are busy people! With our variety of class times, online workouts, or personal training options, we are here to make sure you continue to prioritize your health and fitness. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Small, consistent efforts will give you significant results over time. (Consistency being the key!) Keep investing in your well-being and enjoy the benefits of feeling healthier, happier, and stronger.
